Rare Unused Genju Funehiro 2-Sun Japanese Plane 78mm | Shinwa Steel | Koyoshiya

This is a rare, unused 2-sun Japanese carpenter's plane (Kanna) by Genju Funehiro (元寿舟弘), crafted by Yuji Funatsu (船津祐司), the third-generation craftsman, in Yoita, Niigata, Japan.

This special wide-blade plane features an approximately 78mm blade width and is forged from Shinwa Steel (新和鋼).

The blade has been traditionally hardened using pine charcoal, a time-honored Japanese forging and heat-treatment method that provides a good balance of sharpness, edge retention, and toughness.

The plane body is made from Shirokashi (Japanese white oak) by Koyoshiya (小吉屋), providing a traditional and well-balanced construction.

Rarity

The combination of Genju Funehiro craftsmanship, a special 2-sun / approximately 78mm blade width, Shinwa Steel, and traditional pine-charcoal hardening is rarely encountered on the market.

Examples with this combination of specifications, particularly in unused condition with the original presentation materials, are difficult to find. This makes the plane especially attractive to collectors of high-grade Japanese carpenter's tools.
