Authentic Japanese Natural Whetstone: Nakayama Tomae Madara 1435g | Custom-Made Size 30 Large Format

An authentic Nakayama Tomae natural finishing whetstone (Awasedo) from Shohonyama, Kyoto.

This is a custom-made Betsuatsurae Size 30 large-format whetstone, measuring approximately 208 × 86 × 33 mm and weighing 1,435 g. Its unusually large dimensions and special-order specification make it a highly uncommon piece.

Extremely Rare Custom-Made Piece

Among the finest Nakayama Tomae stones, only a few percent exhibit this distinctive Madara (mottled) pattern.

This stone was produced as a special-order piece using carefully selected natural stone material. There is no fixed production schedule for stones of this type. Future availability depends entirely on the discovery of suitable raw material and the craftsman's ability to produce another piece of comparable quality.

Even if another Nakayama stone becomes available in the future, reproducing the same size, pattern, structure, and sharpening characteristics cannot be guaranteed.

Flawless Condition & Dual-Surface Usability

The stone is in unused, pristine condition and is structurally intact. It has no toxic lines, cracks, or problematic inclusions, providing a clean and reliable sharpening surface without concerns about damaging the edge of a blade.

All four corners are exceptionally crisp and remain completely chip-free.

The back surface has been fully prepared and flattened for sharpening. This allows the back to be used as the primary working surface while preserving the beautiful, untouched Madara pattern on the top face.

Sharpening Characteristics

The stone offers a smooth and responsive sharpening feel with excellent tactile feedback. It produces a refined, razor-sharp edge with a clean and controlled sharpening action.

Its characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of traditional Japanese tools, including professional kitchen knives, Japanese chisels (Nomi), and Japanese kanna (woodworking planes).
